The highly anticipated BMW M5 is set to hit UK showrooms later this year, equipped with an exhilarating 717bhp V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain and starting at £110,500.

This seventh-generation M5 marks a pivotal shift from traditional petrol power to an advanced electrified system, delivering an astonishing 717bhp and 738lb-ft of torque, far surpassing its predecessors.

This impressive powertrain enables the M5 to sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 189mph when equipped with the optional Driver’s Package. At its core is a high-revving (7200rpm) 577bhp twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine, paired with a 196bhp electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic gearbox—an arrangement first introduced in BMW’s XM SUV.

Despite a substantial weight increase to approximately 2400kg, the M5 maintains its remarkable performance. The hefty 18.6kWh battery, which provides an electric-only range of 42-43 miles, adds nearly 500kg compared to the previous pure-V8 M5.

BMW's M division has meticulously refined the M5's chassis. The enhanced suspension, bespoke M differential, and rear axle steering up to 1.5 degrees significantly improve manoeuvrability and stability.

The interior blends familiarity with innovation. While retaining the essence of the standard 5 Series cabin, it features distinct elements such as bucket seats, extensive carbon fibre trim, and a unique control panel for driving modes. Dedicated physical controls for performance-focused functions, including a lap timer and launch control, cater to driving enthusiasts.

Driving the New BMW M5 The new BMW M5, unveiled without camouflage, is a striking presence on the road. The G90-generation M5 is the first to extend beyond five meters in length, with a notably wider stance—75mm broader at the front and 48mm at the rear compared to the already substantial 5 Series.

Had this model been released a few years ago, it might have been branded the M7, a territory BMW's M division has yet to explore. The most eye-catching statistic, however, is its weight.

BMW's M division has excelled in making hefty cars handle brilliantly, and the new M5 is no exception. The current M3 Competition, despite its bulk and imposing road presence, remains a paragon of responsive and engaging handling.

The new BMW M5 masterfully combines electrifying power, cutting-edge technology, and refined handling. It continues BMW’s tradition of high-performance super-saloons while embracing a forward-looking hybrid future.
