The Goodwood Festival of Speed proved more than successful for BMW, as enthusiasts flocked to their enclosure for a much-awaited unveiling. The Munich-based manufacturer showcased the first-ever BMW M3 Touring at the event and even drove it around the track to flaunt its performance.
The car is quite similar to the sedan variant of the M3 in terms of performance and luxury, but with the added advantage of cargo space. The exterior is quite similar as well, with the Touring looking exactly like its sibling from the front end down to the B-pillar. It is only after that point that the roof stretches, and the rear-end of the vehicle starts to differ from the sedan version.
BMW opted not to use carbon fibre on the roof, possibly to save on cost, but it provided its customers with an alternative. The roof can be painted in a glossy black colour (to mimic the aesthetic of a shiny carbon fibre roof closely) or the same colour as the body. However, the rear spoiler only comes in black.
The BMW M3 Touring is 4,794 millimetres long, 1,903 millimetres wide and 1,436 millimetres high. These measurements make the M3 Touring longer, wider, and lower than the 3 Series Touring. It is clear that BMW has crafted the M3 Touring to mean business.
Under the hood, the elongated car gets the inline-six 3.0-litre engine, which is quite popular among BMW vehicles. However, this one is specially tuned to justify the Competition badging on the M3 Touring. Therefore, the engine makes a whopping 510 hp and 650 Nm of torque while connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The latter transfers power to all four wheels, resulting in a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds. This might not seem fast, but keep in mind that the M3 Touring is a slightly bulky vehicle. So, 3.6 seconds is more than respectable.
However, the truly impressive part is inside the cabin, where luxury and spaciousness are second to none. The M3 Touring's interior is based on the 3 series but fine-tuned to a higher level. The dash consists of a 12.3-inch driver display with an accompanying 14.9-inch infotainment screen. Buyers will get both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for their entertainment needs.
With the added features and the extra performance, the first-ever BMW M3 Touring will cost £88,550. The car will be available by September 2022, so the time to rejoice is near.
